Cherokee Phoenix

During my time at the Cherokee Phoenix, I was able to discover more about my Native American ancestory through reporting on the culture and people of the Cherokee Nation. For those who are unaware of the Cherokee Phoenix’s work, it is known the nations first newspaper printed in a Native American language.

In the summer of 2017, I spent the month of June studying abroad in Ireland. When I returned from my month abroad, I immediately began working at the Cherokee Phoenix until I had to return to school. Working for the Cherokee Nation allowed me to dive deep into my ancestorial past, allowing me to help others understand the Cherokee Nation as well.

Below are a few of the stories I did while working at the phoenix. I covered Indian Child Welfare, a Cherokee Nation council race and a Cherokee Nation author.

This story highlighted what the Cherokee Nation Indian Child Welfare aims to do in regards to the children in their program. Read more about the story here.
This story highlighted the council runoff for district 9 of the Cherokee Nation. To read the full story click on this link.
